Having a good beauty routine isn’t just about the products you use, but also about how and when you use these products. Learning to optimise your skincare routine means working out what products are best for your skin and how to use them for maximum benefit, which is where triple cleansing comes in. “Cleanse, tone, moisturise” seems woefully outdated, these days, and even those of us who double cleanse are being left behind by the new, updated mantra coming from anyone who knows anything in the world of skin – TRIPLE CLEANSE is what we do in 2019.
So, what is triple cleansing? Is it just a fancy way of saying ‘wash your face three times’? Well…yes…and also no!
Triple cleansing is, in essence washing your face three times, but there’s method to the madness (don’t worry, we can hear all you dry skinned folk out there screaming at the thought of how dry your face would be if you simply washed it three times in a row!). Triple cleansing starts with using an oil-based cleanser to get rid of the days’ dirt, pollution and make-up. Most make up needs a proper oil-based product to really get rid of it, and with more traffic and pollution than ever, here in the UK, pollution is a very real skincare concern, especially for those of us who live and work in cities or large towns.
A skincare guru once likened washing our faces with make-up on to having a shower with our clothes on – the outer layer might get clean but we need to get rid of everything before we can actually wash our skin. With that being said, the next step in a triple cleanse routine should be a skin-nourishing product, which will not only clean the skin but also avoid stripping away too many of the skin’s natural oils.
The final step should be either another wash with your nourishing cleanser or a final wash with a different moisturising product. This will ensure that not only have all traces of make up and dirt been removed from your skin, but that your skin has been really taken back to purity, giving you the ideal base to work with and a perfect canvas for make-up.
If you suffer with dry skin, you may need to follow up with a moisturiser of your choice to ensure that your skin doesn’t dry out, but triple cleansing is said to give people the best complexion of their lives. Here are three products that we recommend for each step:
Step One – Oil Cleanser
For this step, we recommend Elemis Nourishing Omega Rich Cleansing Oil, which soothes, softens and lifts impurities whilst maintaining the skins natural barrier. It’s great for removing even the toughest, most stubborn waterproof make-up.
Step Two – Nourishing Cleanser
For the middle step of your triple cleanse routine, we recommend Dermalogica Essential Cleansing Solution. It’s water-soluble and soothing, forming an emulsion which rinses off easily, leaving the skin refreshingly clean, soft and supple.
Step Three – Moisturising Cleanser
Finally, we recommend Dermalogica Intensive Moisture Cleanser which will complete the final cleansing step of your routine, while adding a layer of protective and restorative moisture to the skin.
