Even people with little or no interest in beauty or skincare will be able to tell you that the standard is “cleanse, tone, moisturise”. However, the ‘tone’ step is probably the one which is most misunderstood. Everyone knows why you need to clean your skin, and it’s easy to work out why you need to moisturise, but is toning still an important step and does everyone need to do it?

The toning part of your skin routine is definitely important; A good toner will remove any remaining bits of oil, dirt and debris left behind by the cleanser. More importantly, toner will help soothe, nourish and hydrate the skin while restoring its delicate pH balance. Obviously, your skincare routine is totally down to you, so if you really don’t feel you benefit from toning, you can leave it out, but it’s worth remembering that toners have come a long way over the years.

With that in mind, we thought we’d show you some of the best toners for each skin type, so that you can decide whether to tone or not:

Teenage Skin

If your teen has spot-prone skin, it can be hard to find a skincare routine which suits them, and many toners may be too astringent for them. Dermalogica All Over Toner is formulated for teenagers with acne or breakout prone skin which controls excess oil and helps eliminate breakouts on the face and body with salicylic acid.

Dry Skin

Although it’s suitable for all skin types, Dermalogica Multi-Active Toner is perfect for those of us who suffer with dry skin as it gives the complexion an intense wash of moisture. Arnica and cucumber extracts help keep skin smooth and refreshed, making it ideal for rehydrating skin after air travel.

Sensitive Skin

If you suffer with sensitive skin, many toners can be too harsh. However, Elemis Balancing Lavender Toner helps to rebalance the complexion from within and contains soothing lavender to help rid your skin of redness and inflammation.

Ageing Skin

Ageing skin usually suffers from some level of dullness and dehydration, because as we age this skin loses it’s ability to retain moisture. Decleor Essential Tonifying Lotion balances the skin’s natural pH and leaves skin feeling beautifully refreshed, revitalised and rehydrated. Active ingredients include detoxifying green tea essential water to help remove impurities and tighten pores for a clearer, more radiant complexion.
