Party season is well and truly upon us, and everyone we know is out for Christmas drinkies with workmates, friends, family and anyone else who wants to share a bit of festive cheer. For us girls, having flawless make-up is the main aim, and patchy foundation is well and truly off of our Christmas card lists, so we thought we’d share a few tips for stopping your foundation from losing its cool:

What Else is on Your Face?

We know that a skincare routine is super important, but sometimes using a plethora of products on your face can interefere with the way your foundation sits on your skin. Things like skin oils and serums can be too rich under foundations, so opting for a light, all-in-one primer like Dermalogica SkinPerfect Primer SPF30 can keep your skin in great condition while providing a base which will keep your foundation in place all night.

Is Your Skin Too Oily/Dry?

Unless you’re someone who’s blessed with ‘normal’ skin, there’s a good chance that you’ll have patches of either dryness or too much oil, both of which can interfere with make-up. Dry skin will make foundation appear dry and cracked, for which we’d recommend Elemis Pro-Radiance Illuminating Flash Balm. Oily skin needs sebum control – Decleor Ylang Cananga Facial Oil Serum is perfect for this.

Are You Using the Correct Applicator?

The applicator you use for your foundation depends heavily on what type of foundation you’re using in the first place. Thicker liquid foundations benefit from a sponge or beauty blender as this will help to distribute the product and push it effectively into the skin. Lighter foundations of powders are best when buffed in using a kabuki brush.

Are you Exfoliating?

One of the most common causes of patchy foundation is skin which is in desperate need of an exfoliator. Failing to exfoliate can leave your face covered in dead skin cells, which will clump together with foundation and look generally awful. Every skin type can be exfoliated, even sensitive skin, you just need to choose the correct product.

Do you Touch Your Face?

This might seem like an odd question, but many of us are unconscious face touchers. Whether it’s an anxiety thing or just a habit that you’ve fallen into, if you touch your face a lot during the day, you’re going to literally rub patches of foundation off with your hands. Try to be aware of face touching and keep it to a minimum for a flawless base.
