Although we sell a lot of products which are multifunctional, it’s rare to find a single product which does absolutely everything to look after your skin. Anyone who know anything about skincare agrees that a multi-product approach is key, but are you layering your products in a way that offers maximum benefit to your skin? With this in mind, we’re looking at how the professionals layer skincare to ensure you get the best bang for your buck from your favourite products:

Start with the thinnest products

The first thing you should think about with the products you’re using is the consistency of each one. Some products are thicker than other and if you apply these first, it’s going to be much harder for thinner products to absorb into the skin. In fact, if you don’t start with the thinnest products first, there’s a good chance they won’t absorb at all, and will just sit on the surface. Start with serums or liquid treatments to be sure you get the best results.

Now add your ‘treatments’

If you use a product which is a targeted treatment, such as something to tackle hyperpigmentation, now is the time to apply it. This is because the serum will have prepped the skin and will allow the treatment to have the best effect possible. If hyperpigmentation is something you deal with, now is the time to apply Dermalogica Power Rich.

Get hydrated

Now is the time to add your moisturiser, as this will not only hydrate your skin but will also help to lock in the first two layers of products and ensure they get to the right parts of your skin. Opt for a moisturiser which is created for your skin type, so that you’ll get the maximum effects for your complexion.

SPF

The next step in your layering, and arguably one of the most important, should be an SPF to give your skin daily protection from the sun. It’s now widely accepted that even if you live in the UK, the sun is strong enough to do irreversible damage to your skin on a daily basis. We suggest opting for a broad spectrum sunscreen which has an SPF of at least 30, such as Decleor Protective Anti-Wrinkle Cream SPF30.

Anti-pollution

Finally, protecting your skin against pollution is the last thing that you should be doing, as air pollution effectively ‘sticks’ to the top layer of whatever is on your face. Decleor Anti-Pollution Hydrating Gel-Cream is a great option as it’s ideal for normal and combination skin types and will also give your skin a wash of moisture.
