Everyone knows that cold, harsh winter weather wreaks havoc on the skin as it causes it to become dry, flaky and extremely dull. Just because your skin is not as exposed through the winter as much as it is through the summer doesn’t mean that you don’t need to take care of it. In order to prevent your skin looking a little worse for wear on nights out during the winter you should follow these simple tips in order to keep it in tip top condition.

Although we all know that the winter temperatures aren’t at all friendly to our skin, a lot of people don’t actually know why. The reason is that the harsh environment which combines strong winds and cold temperatures really dehydrates the skin, stripping it of not only the moisture that it’s gained from your moisturiser but also the natural moisture that your skin produces. A lot of people turn to hot showers and baths in order to warm up in the winter but this takes even more of the essential moisture out of your skin leaving your skin dry and unprotected.

Counteracting the effects of cold weather doesn’t require a lot but it requires more than merely applying a moisturiser more often.

• Rather than washing in hot water use water that’s lukewarm in order to avoid stripping the skin of essential oils.

• After washing you should moisturise straight away with a thick, rich moisturiser like Dermalogica Intensive Moisture Balance which aims to replenish vital moisture.

• You should always protect yourself from the weather so wearing hats, gloves and scarves is essential. You’ll probably find that your hands are much drier in the winter because they are constantly exposed to the harsh conditions which is why it’s essential to replenish the lost moisture with a specialist hand cream like Dermalogica Hand and Nail Treatment.
