Here in the UK, we’re currently experiencing something of a heatwave, which can be both a blessing and a curse in a country where the weather can often be dreary and we’re not really geared up for such warm climates. As the summer heat intensifies, it brings along a host of challenges, especially for those with sensitive skin. The combination of high temperatures, excessive sun exposure, and increased humidity can wreak havoc on delicate skin, leading to irritation, dryness, and flare-ups. However, with a few simple precautions and adjustments to your skincare routine, you can protect and maintain the health of your sensitive skin even during a scorching heatwave. In honour of the fact that we’re offering 20% off of skincare for sensitive skin all week long, here are five things that you can do to help you effectively care for your sensitive skin during the hottest days of the year:
Stay Hydrated
One of the most crucial aspects of maintaining healthy skin during a heatwave is staying properly hydrated. Drinking an adequate amount of water throughout the day not only helps your body regulate its temperature but also keeps your skin hydrated from within. Opt for at least eight glasses of water daily and consider incorporating hydrating fruits and vegetables into your diet, such as watermelon, cucumbers, and oranges. Avoid dehydrating beverages like sugary fizzy drinks and caffeinated drinks that can contribute to skin dryness.
Shield Your Sensitive Skin from the Sun
Excessive sun exposure is a major trigger for sensitive skin, leading to redness, inflammation, and even sunburn. Protect your skin by seeking shade during peak sun hours, usually between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. If you must be outdoors, wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing that covers your skin and invest in a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a high SPF rating. Look for mineral-based sunscreens containing ingredients like zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, as these are generally better tolerated by sensitive skin.
Choose Gentle and Non-Irritating Products
During a heatwave, it’s essential to reassess your skincare products and opt for those specifically designed for sensitive skin. Look for mild, fragrance-free cleansers and moisturisers that are free from potential irritants like alcohol, sulphates, and synthetic fragrances. Avoid harsh exfoliants and instead opt for gentle methods like chemical exfoliation using alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) or beta-hydroxy acids (BHAs) to remove dead skin cells and unclog pores without causing irritation.
Keep Your Sensitive Skin Cool
Maintaining a cool environment for your skin can help reduce inflammation and prevent excessive sweating, which can lead to skin irritation. Take cool showers instead of hot ones, as hot water can strip the skin’s natural oils and exacerbate sensitivity. Use a gentle, soothing moisturiser immediately after showering to lock in moisture. Additionally, keep a facial mist or aloe vera gel in the refrigerator and spritz it on your face throughout the day to refresh and calm your skin.
Stay Mindful of Air Conditioning
While air conditioning provides relief from the heat, it can also dehydrate your skin. Optimise your indoor environment by setting your air conditioner to a moderate temperature and using a humidifier to add moisture back into the air. Additionally, avoid sitting directly in front of air vents, as the direct stream of cold air can dry out your skin further. Consider using a lightweight, non-comedogenic moisturiser to create a protective barrier against dry air.
