How to Treat Sunburn

sunburnIt would be really easy to lecture you all on not getting burned but if the yearly photos of Brits abroad looking like lobsters tells us anything it’s that sunburn DOES happen. If you do happen to be unlucky enough to end up burnt, how you care for yourself after the fact will make a huge difference to your healing time. Follow these tips for treating sunburn and you’ll be feeling less sore in record time:

Get Out of the Sun

It may seem like a no-brainer to suggesting taking a break from the sun, but you’d be surprised by how many people persevere with their sun worship even after being badly burned. Multiple sunburns will increase your risk of skin cancer exponentially, so it’s really important to give your skin a bit of R&R after a burn.

Drink Plenty of Water

Sunburn and dehydration go hand in hand, so there’s a good chance that you’ll need to top up your fluids if you’ve had a burn. Skin which is frazzled will be severely lacking in moisture so it’s important to stay hydrated in order to give your skin what it needs to begin the healing process.

Aftersun

Replenishing moisture is really important after sunburn, and opting for an aftersun with soothing ingredients such as camomile or aloe vera could really help to calm your skin, relieve the sting and help it to heal. We recommend Decleor High Repair After Sun Balm for the Face as it’s 100% natural. We’d also suggest alternating Dermalogica After Sun Repair and Decleor Soothing After Sun Milk for the Body for optimum repair.

Choose the Right Products

It’s important to use delicate products on your skin after a sun burn so that you don’t exacerbate the redness and feelings of soreness, so opting for gentle or soothing products is a must. For cleansing your face, we recommend Decleor Soothing Micellar Water followed by either Dermalogica UltraCalming Barrier Repair or Dermalogica Gentle Soothing Booster. At night it would be wise to opt for Decleor Rose D’Orient Soothing Night Balm.

DON’T GET BURNED AGAIN!

We can’t state this strongly enough; you need to try not to get burned again. Staying out of the sun isn’t always possible, so wearing something to cover your shoulders as well as a broad-spectrum high SPF like Dermalogica Protection 50 Sport SPF50 is your best bet for protecting yourself against further damage (and avoiding the potential of ruining your holiday!).
