It may seem like the simplest thing in the world, but there’s actually more to washing your face than you might think. Many of us are washing our faces in a way which might actually be more damaging to our complexion, so we thought we’d take you through a few simple steps and debunk some of the myths around face-washing.
Make-Up Remover isn’t Enough
Products which are geared up towards removing make-up (much of which is oil-based and therefore needs specific compounds to break it down) aren’t necessarily enough to keep your whole face clean. Ideally, you should be using a product such as Dermalogica Soothing Eye Make Up Remover (which also works on lips) followed by an overall cleanser such as Decleor Brightening Cleansing Foam which will remove excess sebum and impurities from the whole face.
Don’t Wash Too Often
Although it’s tempting to think that a super clean face is a super healthy face, this might not always be the case. Washing your face in the morning, or if you’ve exercised or been wearing make-up, is fairly essential but over-washing your face can exacerbate dryness, over-production of oils and even skin conditions such as rosacea, so try to use your judgement about whether your face really needs a scrub or if it can wait ’til morning.
You MUST Cleanse, Tone and Moisturise
Okay, so we’ve been pretty adamant in the past about needing to follow every step in the process and on a good day, following the “CTM” mantra is the best thing for your skin. However, skipping the toning process won’t be the end of the world here and there (and you should always opt for an alcohol-free toner), and there are also several multitasking products, such as Dermalogica UltraCalming Cleanser which will cleanse your face whilst soothing the skin AND adding a layer of moisture.
Keep Your Tools Clean
Using a brush, such as the Dermalogica Exfoliating Face Brush to exfoliate your face and maintain healthy glowing skin is brilliant, especially for those with dry or combination skin which causes unsightly flaking. However, lots of people forget that the brush itself needs cleaning too, to keep it free from bacterial build-up. Always rinse your brush well after use and allow to air-dry, and if it’s really in need of a wash, use a tiny drop of baby shampoo to lather it up and rinse completely.
I think cleansing before bed is a lot more important than in the morning. Skin repairs overnight so a good moisturiser should be applied to thoroughly clean skin.
I never cleanse my face in the morning, I just use water. It’s been the best thing I’ve found as my skin has repaired overnight and natural oils which we need are there. In the mornings I just give a quick massage with my Dermalogica rubber face mit using water only. I have dry skin through cheeks so doing a full cleanse morning and night was drying me out.
I find this works really well for me 🙂
